Background:

Alexander is just a normal boy, from a normal family. Very normal.

Except that as he grew up, his very prominent ears became more and more obvious - getting stares even in a town full of magical people. Because no one else in his family does. Is it a genetic oopsie, or is there more to his background than his parents claim?

People like nice people, even nice people with weird ears, so he tried to be nice, he really did, he was a nice friendly guy who does nice friendly things like donating to the poor, volunteering, and defending those weaker than him against bullies. He made friends. But in the end it was all performative, and if he didn't get what he wanted soon enough, he exploded. Bold on the outside, prickly insecurity on the inside.

Then one day, Alice stumbled into him. He'd heard about her, in fact, she was at his place for some toadification she had done to his mom. She wasn't very loved and had issues with her family, which she tried to hide but he could see through it. He charmed her easily, and from one thing came another. She adored him, they married, and a little one was on the way.

She also had a little sister. A girl that felt even worse, undeservedly so, he thought. Watcher overdid talent and beauty when it came to her.

But he was happily married to Alice, they had a son, and the girl went to university. Then she came back, they discovered together there was more than the eye meets to his young son, and - drinking their sorrows on what the hell to do now - they finally did what Alex had been considered trying for a while. Nine months later, there was Demi, but knowing damn well he hadn't done the nice guy™ thing, he lied to everyone around & himself and got increasingly angry at Bianca for reminding him of his mistake.

Some impulsive choices later and the one well-acted good guy act started falling apart even more. Part due to his mistake, his family had to flee. Fortunately he had some connections, and even with all the betrayal he and Alice grew closer again, but nothing could ever truly heal the bitter broken man and all he broke on the way.
