M.J. stood motionless before the bathroom mirror at a random gas station in the Grove, transfixed by the stranger gazing back. A young woman with soft features, lined eyes, and lips painted a soft pink stared out at him.
For nearly two years, he had been playing this dangerous game. He slipped into dresses, heels, and makeup whenever the urge became unbearable. He kept everything hidden at his mom's house, far from his father's reach - a perk of his parents’ divorce.
It was reckless and forbidden, but in those moments, beneath the wig and the foundation, he finally felt like himself. He felt alive, unburdened, and truly free.
If his father ever found out his secret, M.J. had no doubt the man would kill him. But it was Frankie who worried him most - his oldest friend, the one person whose opinion truly mattered.
Losing Frankie scared him far more than his father’s rage. Countless times he had nearly told Frankie the truth, only to choke back the words at the last second. How could he possibly confess to his best friend that he was not only gay…but that he loved dressing as a woman?
He knew the stakes and the risks. Yet tonight, like so many nights before, M.J. applied the final touch of lipstick and stepped out into the night.
