Every structure within the syndicate, regardless of its purpose - whether factories, shipyards, or other facilities - was designated with the moniker "Warehouse". Warehouse 22 stood out as a prized location among Blue Faction workers, serving as the central hub for all imports and exports. Essentially, nothing moved in or out of Paradise without the Blue Faction's approval, with one notable exception: the Purple Faction's imports operated outside this control.
Doreen Westbrooke-Diez, Anton's eldest daughter, effectively ran Warehouse 22 independently, thanks to her father's unwavering trust in her abilities. She had been entrusted with the reins of the import and export hub, and she oversaw its operations with remarkable shrewdness, proving more than capable of handling the immense responsibility that came with managing one of the Blue Faction's most critical assets.
Despite Anton's pride in his daughter's business acumen, Doreen's disagreeable attitude and harsh treatment of those she deemed inferior earned her the silent resentment of many within the syndicate. To the workers, she was more Anton's enforcer than his daughter, doling out punishments with an iron fist and rewards with a miserly hand.
However, they found some solace in the presence of Mickey Rice, Anton's trusted right-hand man, who worked alongside Doreen and occasionally tempered her ruthless impulses.
Although Mickey and Doreen typically saw eye-to-eye, a recent disagreement over his son M.J.'s friendship with Frank Garrett had created tension between them. Mickey knew that Doreen's animosity towards the Garretts, stemming from her long-standing hatred for Natasha, fueled her determination to keep M.J. at arm's length from Frank and his family. Mickey thought the matter had been laid to rest, but Doreen's icy demeanor towards him said otherwise.
Mickey stood beside Doreen, his morning coffee in hand, following her gaze to the workers below. "Did the Matthews' already do their drop-off?" he asked.
Doreen murmured a curt "Mm-hmm."
Mickey released a half sigh, “I see you're still upset with me.”
“I'm not upset,” Doreen said, turning to leave.
Mickey fell into step behind her. "Furious, then," he said, his tone laced with amusement.
“I'm not that, either,” Doreen scoffed as they entered the office.
"Listen, Dee, I get it – you don't have to tell me how you feel about Natasha. But Frank's a good kid, and he's been friends with M.J. since they were young. Besides, you'd have a hard time keeping them apart, considering...well, you know."
Mickey tried not to bring up his son, Ian, too often. Both Anton and Doreen harbored strong resentment towards the fact that he'd fathered a child with Natasha, though their motivations differed. Mickey understood that Anton's anger stemmed from jealousy, but Doreen's hatred towards Natasha remained a mystery. No matter how hard he tried, Doreen never opened up about what drove her animosity towards Natasha.
“Don't remind me.”
Mickey gave a half-hearted shrug. “All I'm saying is that it'd be hard for me to separate them. Especially now since they've known each other since they were little kids.”
“And like I said yesterday, it's not my business. Raise your kid however you want,” Doreen said indifferently.
“C’mon, Dee, I know you. This has to be more than just Natasha. What's really going on?” He asked.
Doreen exhaled. “I lost another one. I'm sorry for taking it out on you, I just haven't been in a good place.”
“Shit, Doreen. I'm so sorry.”
“I wasn’t that far along. Thankfully, we didn’t tell the kids yet; we wanted to be sure that it would…”
'Survive’, Mickey finished in his head. Though neither side said it aloud, Doreen felt the pressure from her father as well as her in-laws to have more children, but despite many pregnancies, she only had three living children.
“Anyway, it is what it is, but please don’t tell my dad. You know how he gets,” Doreen said, snapping Mickey from his thoughts.
Mickey's gaze pierced through Doreen's tough facade, and he saw the pain she was struggling to conceal. Without a word, he wrapped her in a warm, comforting hug, holding her as she broke down in tears.
