Part 11: Medieval Game Guides and Resources

I'm a huge History nerd, so I had a lot of knowledge on the European Middle Ages going into this, but I have still found the community and challenge guides to be enormously helpful in setting up a game that emulates this time period. Here, I will list the resources that I found to be the most helpful in guiding the structure and setup of the world and economy. You don't have to abide by Challenge rules, I only use them as a loose guideline myself, but they are a great starting point as they are all well-thought-out and lay things out in a nice, logical fashion.

Vllygrl's The Medieval Charter Challenge :
A very simple, fantastic entry point challenge for a Medieval Game. Lots of guidance on how to potentially begin your game, setting up various families and services, and what elements are realistic for each class. A great read for anyone looking to slowly build up a city from scratch.

I would also recommend downloading the ROS for MCC* (Random Occurrence Scenario) while there. It can add some fun and unexpected events to your rotations.

Heloise's Warwickshire: A Renaissance Challenge : A much more intensive Challenge. Like seriously, the level of detail made my eyes cross. This one seems ideal as a followup to the MCC as it would work beautifully with finessing an already-established Kingdom.

Visit and register at The Plumb Bob Keep (PBK) for tons of resources on historical game play and also discussion on how others are creating their games. Not to mention that they basically have the best downloads anywhere for this type of game.

Some great Historical Reading:
almighty hat's big medieval reference post
medieval costuming resources-- inspiration and construction

If/When you read through any Challenges, you'll notice that you will often be prompted to do a dice roll to establish random Sims, traits, etc. If you're a DND player and you have a set of multi-sided die lying around, then you're all set! If not, however there are options out there for you to use instead:

I use an app on my phone called CritDice. It cost me a dollar, I think, but I found it to be easier since I could set up presets and save them to a folder that I can just open quickly for Sim stuff.
